2025 Lifetime Achievement Award
The Rhode Island State Firefighters League’s Professional Awards Committee has awarded its 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award to retired Cumberland Hill Fire Chief Richard A. Susi. Chief Susi began his firefighting career in 1973, promoted up thru the ranks and was eventually promoted to Fire Chief in 2001 and retired in 2009.
Susi joined the RI Association of Fire Chiefs (RIAFC) in 2001 and appointed to the Board of Directors in 2002. Susi would later serve as President of the RI Association of Fire Chiefs in 2005. He also joined the New England Association of Fire Chiefs Board of Directors in 2002 and would later serve as that organization’s President in 2006. Susi also serves on the board of the RIAFC Charitable Trust Foundation since 2011.
In 2008, Susi was elected Secretary of the RI Fire Chiefs Association and in 2010 would be appointed as the Chiefs Association’s Executive Director, positions he still currently holds.
Susi has also served as Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board 2010-2020, and also serves on the RI Citizens Commission for the Care & Safety of the Elderly 2010-present. Susi is also a charter member of the “Local Assistance State Team” (LAST) since 2010 and currently serves as Chairman of the “Line of Duty Death Committee” (LODD) for the RI Firefighters Memorial since 2021. And he was also a member of the building committee for the RI Firefighters Memorial in Exeter 2017-2019.
Susi also currently serves as the Legislative Advocate for the fire service in the RI General Assembly since 2004, serving the RI Association of Fire Chiefs and the RI State Firefighters League since 2010.
The RI State Firefighters League will honor Chief Susi at its annual President’s Dinner on Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at Bella’s Restaurant, located at 1992 Victory Highway, Burrillville, RI, with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 7:05 p.m. Dinner will be family style chicken and roast beef, pasta and potatoes with salad and dessert. Tickets are $40.00 pp, with checks being sent to the RISFL, P.O. Box 131, Foster, RI. Cash and checks will be accepted at the door, but no credit cards accepted. Mini-Grants Available Revised April 13, 2024 The Rhode Island State Firefighters League Foundation Charitable Trust is now also offering mini grants to league member departments. The mini grants will be made for one night training sessions at the host department that would be open to all of their neighboring departments. The mini grants would be limited to $300.00 and would be used to pay for the expense of an outside instructor as well as class handouts and light refreshments. There is no cost sharing requirement. There is no deadline for the application -- it can be submitted anytime throughout the year.

New Public Safety Officer Benefits Form Posted April 29, 2011 A new beneficiary form that is accepted for the Public Safety Officer Benefits program is now available. This form can be used in place of the original six page form. All Fire Departments should print this form on their own letterhead, have each volunteer firefighter complete the form in private, and maintain the forms in a secure file in individually sealed envelope at the station.
